Minnesota Lawns to Legumes Program New! Featured

Minnesota Lawns to Legumes Program
The Minnesota Lawns to Legumes Program is a statewide initiative that helps residents convert portions of traditional lawns into pollinator-friendly habitat using native plants. The program is administered by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) in partnership with Blue Thumb – Planting for Clean Water.

What the Program Provides

- Reimbursement grants of up to $400 for eligible pollinator habitat projects during active funding cycles.
- Free workshops, coaching, planting guides, and design resources.
- Support for creating habitat for native bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators.

Who Can Apply?

Any Minnesota homeowner or renter with outdoor planting space—including yards, boulevards (where permitted), patios, or container gardens—may apply when grant cycles are open. Awards are distributed through a weighted lottery system that prioritizes areas important to at-risk pollinators.

Since launching in 2019, the program has helped create thousands of residential pollinator habitats across all 87 Minnesota counties and has become a national model for pollinator conservation.
